Social Technologies logoAccording to a recent press release from Social Technologies, by helping users to passively receive the information they need instead of actively filtering through irrelevant content, Web 3.0 will change the way people use the Internet. Web 3.0, which heralds the next era in the evolvement of World Wide Web, will be characterized by semantic Web services; reliance on Web-based applications; location-based services; and ambient intelligence devices. Semantic Web described Web data that is “tagged” with information about website content that makes it easier for computers to search for the data users are looking for.

“Tagged data would allow software to recognize relationships among information and filter out undesired search results, causing the Web to function more like a database. The semantic Web reduces the amount of time spent looking for desired information on the Web.”

FriendFeed logoIn an article on Mashable, Kristen Nicole asks the question, Is FriendFeed moving toward the semantic web? The question is sparked by this observation related to a new FriendFeed feature that launched this week, FriendFeed Rooms. Here is Nicole’s take on the service:

I’d say that FriendFeed rooms increases [the] potential [that FriendFeed is moving further toward the semantic web], as it still needs more search and filter options incorporated into its service. Nevertheless, these niche FriendFeed rooms could become more relevant than a personalized news source, if implemented correctly.
